1. BHP Billiton Bursary Scheme
BHP Billiton is a well known South African company and is one of the the largest mineral resource company in South Africa. They are also a global company and their areas of mining include iron ore, coal, silver, titanium, diamonds, aluminium,copper, nickel, titanium and others.
They are also into oil and natural gas operations. They do offer chemical engineering bursaries for students studying for a chemical engineering course and other related courses including geology, mechanical, electrical among others.
The contract of the bursary binds one to a service contract after graduating that is equivalent to the period of the tenure of the bursary awarded/one to work for them to repay the amount they were awarded in total. This bursary is open to University degree courses as well as Technikon diplomas.
Matric students who unfortunately are not able to finish their degree will have to work for them to pay back all the money spent by BHP. For one to eligible for the bursary, one must fullfill certain uconditions
- Be a South African citizen
- Permanent resident in South Africa
- Grade 12 learner
- Have a ‘C’ symbol in both science and Mathematics
Bursary from BHP covers: -registration & tuition fees, residence fees, cash allowance to cater for buying of textbooks plus other items, 2ndyear student qualify for a personal computer. Applications close 31st of May every year.

2. Gold Fields Mining Bursaries
Gold Fields is a big producer of gold said to produce approx 2,000,000 gold ounces from different mines around the world in South Africa, Australia, Peru & Ghana.
The closing date for bursary applications is 31st July. All bursary applications should be directed.

3. Afrox Bursary
Afrox – African Oxygen Limited, founded in 1927, is an organization that has influence in the sub-Saharan Africa region and is said to be a leader in gases & welding products. It is listed in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1963. It operates in South Africa and ten other African nations.
Afrox offers bursaries to full-time students in Chemical engineering and other related fields such as metallurgy, mechanical, Chemical, electrical (heavy current) and industrial.
