Anglo American in South Africa has 3 mining related businesses running ie: Platinum, Kumba Iron Ore and Thermal Coal.
Their iron ore, platinum and thermal coal businesses help students and graduates by running programmes/schemes to assist them as they go into the the world of mining. Their programs and schemes are tailor made to meet the unique requirements of their business.
Anglo America bursaries are normally given to outstanding candidates whose aim is to go into a career related to what the company does ie mining, IT or accountancy.
The specific fields of study related to Engineering would in this case be:
- Land survey
- Electrical engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Mine survey
For students that are studying in the fields of finance who plan to become chartered accountants are also eligible for bursaries. Also, applications from those in the IT field will be considered.
Some of the conditions that one need to meet in order for them to qualify for a bursary with Anglo American company is:-
- Academic excellence
- Leadership qualities.
Bursaries normally cover:-
- Cost of tuition at approved universities
- Accommodation & books
- Spending allowance is also awarded based on merit.
For students that are studying Engineering, they are expected to further their qualifications and achieve the Government Certificate of Competency and therefore require mine exposure to achieve this.
The also affects mining students who are supposed to get the Mine Managers certificate. Chartered accounting students are seconded to approved auditing firms for their training contracts.
The student is obligated to work for the Anglo American for each year that they were sponsored for their studies.
